Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy: Brand Name) is a medication used to help control blood sugar levels in Type 2 Diabetes, but studies suggest that it may also help people without diabetes lose weight. Semaglutide is FDA approved for the treatment of obesity with the goal of weight loss. Semaglutide is a highly effective hormone based medication that mimics a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) which is secreted by the small intestine and targets receptors throughout the body including the brain and sends the signal “I’m Full.” Semaglutide also decreases “gastric emptying,” the process by which the stomach contents are moved into the first part of the small intestine as part of the digestive process resulting in you feeling full faster and longer. This also results in reduced food intake and the desire for snacking! Patients eligible for treatment with Semaglutide include adults who have obesity, a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 30; or overweight with a BMI greater than 27 accompanied by weight-related medical problems such as high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, or high cholesterol. Side effects related to Semaglutide use are gastrointestinal reflux, nausea, vomiting, burping, constipation. Contraindications to Semaglutide use include: Type 1 Diabetes, history or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, decreased kidney function, diabetic retinopathy. Expected weight loss with Semaglutide is 6% of clients weight by week 12 on the max dose. It is recommended that lifestyle changes be made such as diet, eating habits, adding exercise that you enjoy, quality sleep, and finding a diet/meal plan that works for you.
